SBA Names Gull Wing Industries, Inc. First Runner-Up for its
2002 Des Moines District Office Small Business Person of the Year Award

The U.S. Small Business Administration in Des Moines has announced that Al Wadsley, of Gull Wing Industries, Inc. in Alta, Iowa, has been named the First Runner-Up for its 2002 Des Moines District Office Small Business Person of the Year Award.
Each year, in recognition of the small business community's contributions to the American economy and society, the President of the United States designates one week each year as National Small Business Week. Held May 5-11th this year, the highlight of this 35 year-old tradition is the presentation of awards highlighting the outstanding contributions of small business persons and advocates at the district, state and national levels.
Mr. Wadsley's business, Gull Wing Industries, Inc. is a manufacturer of portable power distribution units for a wide variety of uses - including construction contractors and midway carnivals. He and his business were nominated for this year's District Award based on the following criteria:
- Staying power - substantiated history as an established business
- Growth in number of employees
- Increase in sales
- Innovativeness of product and/or service
- Response to adversity
- Contributions to the community
He was nominated for the 2002 Des Moines District Small Business Person of the Year Award by the Storm Lake Chapter of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives).
"The judging was extremely close this year, and while Gull Wing was not selected as this year's District Winner, we are very pleased to have Al Wadsley representing the Des Moines District as our First Runner-Up," Cheryl Eftink, director of the SBA's office in Des Moines, said. "Gull Wing is a tremendous success story and a wonderful example of an Iowa small business at its finest."
Ms. Eftink presented Mr. Wadsley with his First Runner-Up award at a Small Business Week reception held Tuesday, May 7, 2002 at the Storm Lake Chamber of Commerce.
